FBI again searches California federal women’s prison plagued by sexual abuse

Federal investigators on Monday raided a troubled California women’s prison again, searching computers and other items in an apparent escalation of a years-long sexual abuse investigation that led to past accusations against the former warden and other employees. The documents were confiscated.

More than a dozen FBI agents were at the Federal Correctional Facility in Dublin, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. According to officials, the director, deputy director and captain were all removed from the facility. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The investigation led to earlier charges against the former director and other employees.

The FBI confirmed the employee was at the prison, about 21 miles (34 kilometers) east of Oakland, but did not provide further details.

Monday’s enforcement action is the latest dark cloud surrounding FCI Dublin.

A 2021 Associated Press investigation found a long-standing culture of abuse and cover-up at the prison. The report prompted increased scrutiny from Congress, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons promised to fix the problem and change the prison culture.

At least eight staff members, including former warden Ray Garcia, have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. Garcia was convicted in 2022 of sexually abusing inmates and forcing them to pose naked in their cells.

The scandal is one of many problems plaguing the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which also suffers from widespread understaffing, suicides and security breaches.
