Republicans in the Iowa House of Representatives have approved a bill that would criminalize the death of an “unborn child.”

The Iowa House approved a bill Thursday that would criminalize the death of a “fetus” after an Alabama court ruled that frozen embryos can be considered children.
The proposed bill would change the language of Iowa’s current law to address “cause of death or serious injury to a fetus,” defined as “an individual organism from conception to birth.”
Currently, the law provides penalties for abortion of “human pregnancies” and serious injuries.
It is one of several bills being considered in state legislatures across the country that would strengthen legal and constitutional protections for fetuses and embryos, a long-standing goal of the pro-life movement.
The bill must be approved by the state Senate and signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds to become law.
