The US House of Representatives recently rejected a proposal that aimed to reduce NATO’s budget by nearly $500 million. Specifically, the House voted down an amendment that suggested cutting NATO defense spending by $482 million.
The voting outcome showed a significant divide, with a tally of 333 opposed to 80 in favor. Interestingly, all votes supporting the amendment came from Republicans, while 127 Republicans teamed up with 205 Democrats and one independent to block it.
Florida Representative Greg Steube was a prominent advocate for the amendment. He emphasized his view that the US should not financially support NATO allies who fall short of their responsibilities in the alliance. “This is the definition of America First,” he stated. “The United States cannot continue to shoulder the burden of defense for allies who do not play their weight in the collective defense of each NATO member,” he added, noting that the generosity of American taxpayers shouldn’t be taken for granted by these nations.
In a post he made later, Steube reiterated his stance, suggesting that the proposed amendment would reroute nearly $482 million from NATO funds back into US military projects. He highlighted that while the US continues to cover NATO expenses, some member countries seem reluctant to back the US when necessary.
