Former President Trump announced on Monday that he will support former Rep. Mike Rogers (Republican) in the Michigan Senate race, giving him a major boost in the primary.
Mr. Rogers is widely considered the favorite in the race, and Mr. Trump’s support only solidifies that. The former congressman is aiming for the top spot in a crowded field that includes two former members of Congress who have been enemies of the former president.
“Mike has served our country throughout a career full of accolades and victories, from the Army to Congress and hopefully the Senate,” Trump wrote on social media.
“Mike will work closely with me to enact America First. He will secure our borders, stop inflation, grow the economy, strengthen support for our military and veterans, and continue to protect our nation under siege. “We will continue to work tirelessly to protect and defend the Second Amendment,” Trump continued. “Mike Rogers is going to be a great, strong senator for Michigan, and I fully and completely support him. He knows how to win!”
Mr. Rogers is a leading candidate for the top Republican position in the Senate and is backed by the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
The committee’s chairman, Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), has worked closely with President Trump throughout the election cycle, including helping eliminate potentially problematic primaries. Most recently, President Trump endorsed Tim Sheehy of Montana, effectively forcing Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) out of the race for a short time.
For years, leading national Republicans have been pushing for Rodgers to run for the Senate since he retired from the House 10 years ago.
a investigation A poll conducted in late February found Mr. Rogers leading former Rep. Peter Meyer (R-Mich.) by 16 points. Meyer is widely considered an unviable candidate because he has voted to impeach President Trump in 2021.
Since then, former Rep. Justin Amash, who left the Republican Party in 2019 to become an independent, announced his candidacy for the seat as a Republican.
