Ohio governor endorses Dolan in Senate race, putting him at odds with Trump

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) on Monday endorsed state Sen. Matt Dolan in the Republican Senate primary, pitting him against former President Trump, who is supporting another candidate.

The Buckeye State’s Republican primary is a three-way battle between Dolan, Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno.

Mr. Dolan aligns himself with more moderate Republican voices in Ohio, ultimately winning the state’s other seat in the 2022 Senate race won by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio). He chose not to fully support former President Trump over the issue.

In his endorsement, DeWine cited Dolan as the Republican’s best chance to defeat Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).

“Matt’s service, experience and integrity will allow him to most effectively represent Ohio’s interests on the national stage,” the governor said in a statement. “Matt Dolan has a vision for the future. He listens. He fights. And he knows how to get results at Ohio State.”

Dolan also received support Friday from former Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a moderate with a reputation for building bipartisan consensus. Mr. Dolan is seeking to take over Mr. Portman’s role as a moderate candidate in the 2024 election.

Early polls show Moreno slight edge However, Dolan tends to do better in general election polls than Brown, who is more conservative.

Dolan’s support is strongest in his hometown of Cleveland, where his family owns the Cleveland Guardians.

Mr. Brown is doing well in raising money as Democrats see his seat as critical to maintaining their slim majority in the Senate. Brown ran out of office last year, according to a year-end Federal Election Commission filing. $14 million At the bank, LaRose gets smaller. $771,000Moreno’s 2 million dollars and Dolan’s $4.8 million.
