Biden admin releases energy grid plan for electric-, hydrogen-powered freight trucks

On Tuesday, the Biden administration Announces energy grid plan For long-haul cargo trucks powered by electricity and hydrogen, according to press release From the Department of Energy.

The administration’s 16-year power infrastructure plan would install charging and refueling stations along 12,000 miles of busy roads and highways.

“For more than a century, petroleum-fueled cargo transportation has brought critical food and resources to American households, but at the same time these vehicles have also disrupted public health, especially in densely populated areas,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. It has also contributed to the decline in . ”

of National Zero Emission Freight Corridor Strategy Developed by DOE and the Energy and Transportation Integration Administration in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency. The plan aims to create a zero-emissions fueling infrastructure for long-haul, medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks by 2040.

“This strategy will amplify private sector momentum, focus on utility and regulatory energy planning, coordinate industrial activity, and improve air quality in communities heavily impacted by diesel emissions. “It is designed to meet the demands of a growing market by targeting public investments in . “Providing ubiquitous and convenient access to electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refilling along our nation’s freight corridors, intermodal facilities, and busy ports will help to provide at least 30% of our hydrogen supply.” is key to achieving the United States’ goal of promoting [zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles] Achieve sales by 2030 and 100% sales by 2040. ”

Biden’s national climate adviser, Ali Zaidi, noted that 75% of truck traffic travels on 4% of the nation’s roads. He argued the strategy would be a “win-win-win” for communities, businesses and the climate.

The DOE claims that the four-phase construction “has significant potential to save Americans money on consumer goods by reducing the fuel and maintenance costs associated with transportation.” It added that the Energy Grid Plan would “deliver significant health benefits to historically disadvantaged populations who suffer the worst effects of pollution from cargo emissions and help meet national climate change goals.”

The first phase of the strategy, to be completed by 2027, will determine priority hubs based on cargo volume. The next stage will be to “connect hubs along key freight corridors” by 2030. The strategy specifies a further five years to “start network development and expand corridor connectivity”. Finally, in the fourth phase, “ [a] Build a national network by linking regional corridors for ubiquitous access. ”

Long-haul freight trucks account for about 23% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, according to Federal Highway Administrator Shailene Butt.

“These new designations and strategies will expand the national EV charging network, promote clean trade within the freight industry, and support President Biden’s goal of achieving net-zero domestic emissions by 2050. “It will help us do that,” Bhatt said.
