St. Patrick’s Day is a day that many people across the United States look forward to celebrating, whether they are Irish or not.

St. Patrick’s Day is marked by a festive parade filled with Irish culture.

Thousands, even millions, of people participate in parades across the country for this event.

1. New York City

The New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade attracts 2 million visitors each year, according to the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade website.

An astounding 150,000 people also participate in the parade. The parade begins on East 44th Street, moves up Fifth Avenue and ends at East 79th Street.

This historic parade dates back to 1762. According to the website, volunteers have been hosting the event since its inception.

If you’re planning on attending the nation’s largest and oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade, be prepared for a long day. The parade usually takes about 5-6 hours from start to finish and starts at 11am.

2. Chicago

You can also catch a huge St. Patrick’s Day parade in Chicago. The parade lasts about three hours and has been an annual event since 1843, according to ChoiceChicago.com.

The Chicago River turns green every year since 1962, usually on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, according to the site.

Many people gather to watch the river take on a new color.

The dye only lasts a few hours, so make sure you arrive on time if you want to take photos or get a glimpse. You can experience the river by taking a cruise when it is dyed.

3. Boston

According to Irish Central, Boston has the highest concentration of Irish residents in the United States, so it’s no wonder they value vacations so much.

In addition to enjoying the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Boston, you can also run (or watch) the St. Patrick’s Day road race held throughout the city.

There are also plenty of Irish pubs and music events on St. Patrick’s Day and the days before.

4. Savannah, Georgia

St. Patrick’s Day events in Savannah, Georgia start early and stay late. Usually, the festival begins around the city on March 16th and lasts until March 19th.

Savannah hosts one of the largest parades in the country. According to Explore Georgia, about 400,000 people will gather to watch the parade.

Similar to Chicago, Savannah also hosts a fountain greening ceremony in Forsyth Park for visitors to enjoy, according to the website.

5. Denver

Denver hosts parades, bar crawls, and festivals at many of the local Irish pubs throughout the city.

One of the area’s favorite pubs is Scruffy Murphy’s, located next to Coors Field. This pub serves Irish food such as shepherd’s pie and beers such as Guinness.

6. Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day since 1873, according to Trips to Discover. On average, 200,000 people visit the city to watch the annual parade.

You can participate in the city’s marathon competition, and there are also activities for children.

7. Phoenix

Phoenix is ​​one of the U.S. cities that takes St. Patrick’s Day celebrations to the next level.

Facts you may not know about St. Patrick’s Day

The annual parade features bagpipers, Irish step dancers, marching bands, floats and more. It also hosts an annual Irish Family Fair.

8. Cleveland

According to WKYC, Cleveland’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade was in 1842. According to WalletHub research, in 2019 Cleveland was ranked one of the top cities in the United States to celebrate St. Patty’s Day.

According to the Cleveland Traveler, the parade currently draws 500,000 people. The theme of the 2024 parade is ‘Ireland: One Island, One Nation’.

Cleveland’s Irish-American community is evident in the large number of Irish pubs located from the east side to the west side. Some of the most popular establishments include Mullarkey’s Irish Pub, Nora’s Public House, Flannery’s Pub, and Parnell’s Irish Pub. Clevelanders and visitors can also don kilts, wigs and lots of greenery and participate in the St. Patrick’s Day 5K on March 17th.

9. Pittsburgh

The annual parade began in Pittsburgh in 1859, and the tradition will continue downtown this year, according to USA Today.

The 2.3-mile-long parade draws about 200,000 to 350,000 spectators each year, according to Visit Pittsburgh.

10. Dublin, Ohio

Dublin, Ohio may not celebrate as much as Dublin, Ireland, but it hosts one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day party cities in the United States.

St. Patrick’s Day events in Dublin begin with a morning pancake breakfast.

Residents prepare for the day with a pre-parade inflation celebration, and after all the floats are inflated, the parade begins.

11. New Orleans

New Orleans is known to Americans for its Mardi Gras celebrations, but the city also brings the party to life on St. Patrick’s Day.

If you’re spending St. Patrick’s Day in New Orleans, expect to see lots of block parties and parades happening around you.

During the parade, beads and flowers are thrown into the crowd, and sometimes even cabbage.

12. Detroit

Don your best Irish attire and join Motor City’s popular St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The parade draws between 80,000 and 100,000 people each year, according to its website. There will be plenty of marching bands, floats and color guard units to keep you entertained during the two-hour event.
