Shakira has revealed that she prioritized her relationship with ex-partner Gerard Pique over their careers, which they shared for 11 years.
The 47-year-old singer and the 37-year-old soccer star were together from 2011 to 2022 and have sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9. In her recent interview, Shakira reflected on how she gave up her opportunities professionally to take up her time. Pique, who played for FC Barcelona.
“For a long time I was next to Gerrard and put my career on hold so he could play football,” Shakira said in an interview with the Sunday Times published on Friday.

On March 22, the “Whenever, Wherever” hitmaker will debut her first new album in seven years, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore).” Since her separation from Pique, she has released several new songs, but her last full-length studio album, “El Dorado,” was released in 2017.
Shakira told The Sunday Times that between her two albums she spent most of the past seven years raising her children in Barcelona. After breaking up with her Pique, she moved to Miami with Milan and Sasha.
The three-time Grammy Award-winning professional soccer player met her when she made a brief cameo appearance in the music video for “Waka Waka,” the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The two went public with their relationship in 2011 after rumors of their relationship arose. Shakira and Pique announced their split in June 2022, surprising fans. Cheating speculation began shortly after Shakira released the song “BZRP Music Session #53,” in which the soccer player who many felt had admitted to being unfaithful.

She later admitted in an interview with People en Español that she felt “betrayed.” At the time of her divorce, her father had been “seriously injured” in an accident.
“Everything happened at once. The house was falling apart,” she told the outlet. “I learned through the press that I had been betrayed while my father was in intensive care.”

Shakira told the media that at one point she didn’t think she would “survive.”
“The love of my life, my father, was leaving me when I needed him the most,” she revealed. “I couldn’t talk to him or turn to my best friend for the advice I needed.”
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Shakira shared her thoughts on the challenges of romance between a musician and an athlete.

“Empathy is key in an artist’s work. Athletes are constantly at war and must avoid empathy at all costs,” she says. “That’s why it’s probably a very bad idea for artists to have relationships with athletes.”
When asked if she thought she needed to date other artists, Shakira replied, “I don’t know what it takes.”
During an interview with Billboard last year, the pop star spoke about a “dream” she had Pique and her family.

“My priority was my home and my family. I believed in ’till death do us part.’ I believed in that dream, and I wanted to do it for myself and I had that dream for my children,” she told Billboard. “My parents have been together for 50 years and still love each other like it was their first day. That love is unique and unique.
