New research has revealed that people with so-called “woke” ideologies tend to be more unhappy, anxious, and depressed than other people.
This study Scandinavian Journal of Psychology Last week – individuals with critical social justice attitudes were found to be less satisfied with their lives.
The first study surveyed 848 adult participants. The victims included 382 staff and 266 students from the University of Turku in southwestern Finland, 64 staff and students from other Finnish universities, two from overseas universities, and 134 unaffiliated with the university. The second study included 5,030 Finnish citizens aged 15 to 84.
To determine a “critical social justice attitude measure,” the study asked questions about seven highly progressive ideologies:
- “If white people have a higher average income than black people, it’s because of racism.”
- “We should reduce the number of white or European authors on university reading lists.”
- “Microaggressions should be challenged frequently and aggressively.”
- “Trans* women competing against women in sports is not helping women’s rights.” (reverse scoring)
- “We don’t need to talk anymore about the color of people’s skin.”
- “White people cannot understand how black people feel like other black people.”
- “Members of more privileged groups can adopt characteristics and cultural elements of less privileged groups.” (reverse scoring)
said Oskari Lahtinen, study author and senior researcher at the INVEST Research Flagship Center at the University of Turku. Cypost“Perhaps what surprised me most was the gender disparity. Three out of five women view ‘woke’ ideas positively, compared to only one in seven men. At least in Finland. it was.”
The study found that female participants were much more “arousal” than male participants.
The study noted that “overall, men’s support for scale items was much lower than women’s.”
The study found that women were “more than twice as likely to express support” for progressive ideology.
The study found that “the extent to which the selected subpopulations studied accepted, felt neutral, or rejected the scale items was determined by those of the “other” gender, voters of the Left Alliance, and the Green Party.” of voters, female social science students were found to have accepted most scale proposals. Male medical students rejected all scale items except one, and male humanities students and Finnish voters rejected all scale items. ”
The study also found that people in STEM fields and conservative thinkers had lower agreement with progressive beliefs.
The study found that large gender differences in support for woke ideology also affected overall happiness.
The study found that people who subscribe to woke ideology experience increased levels of unhappiness, anxiety, and depression.
According to the report, those who adhered to woke ideology were 67.9% more likely to suffer from anxiety, 32.5% from depression, and 4.5% from unhappiness.
Lahtinen said, “I was paying attention to trends in American universities where a new discourse on social justice was spreading in the 2010s.”
“While critical social justice (or intersectional or ‘woke’) discourse is primarily based on dynamics within American society, it is now surfacing in other Western countries as well,” he noted. . “The advent of critical social justice (often referred to as ‘wokeness’) discourse has generated much discussion in the Finnish media in recent years.”
“There was little data on this debate, so we think the extent to which these attitudes are prevalent is a question worth studying,” Lahtinen said. Since the population is different, I decided to develop the population. ”
The authors further note, “This study was very robust, with a sample size of over 5,000 and good psychometric properties. However, to understand how these attitudes manifest in North America, , the scale needs to be validated in a North American sample, which I recommend to our colleagues in the United States.” Countries need to study the prevalence of these attitudes in their countries of origin. ”
