Pizza shop owner — outraged over ‘sanctuary policies’ that perhaps led to death of Laken Riley — runs for office

The owner of a popular pizza restaurant in Athens, Georgia, announced he is running for local office after the recent death of a young nursing student made him realize how marginalized community leaders were.

Just a few weeks ago, Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, 22, was brutally murdered while on the run.Her lifeless body was later discovered, her skull so badly beaten that it was “ugly”[ed]”arrest” affidavit Said. Her cause of death was blunt force trauma, and the suspect in her case is Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela.

Sidney Ann Waters, who previously owned and operated Mama Sid’s Pizza. 41 years, said Riley’s brutal death was a “reality check” regarding political leadership in and around Athens. “When you’re standing outside looking in and talking, [officials] In the meetings of the various chambers…you don’t think they’re listening. ” waters he said on a recent episode of “Fox & Friends.”

Waters argued that many Georgians are outraged by policies that encourage more illegal immigration into the state, seemingly without their knowledge or consent. Waters noted that Athens is technically “not a sanctuary city,” but explained that a series of “sanctuary policies” approved by Democratic Mayor Kelly Gertz actually made it one. One of the special measures Gertz signed in 2019 welcomes people “of all lands and backgrounds” to Athens, including undocumented immigrants, Waters said.

”[Girtz] “I personally petitioned the U.S. Department of State to make us a refugee resettlement site,” Waters told Fox & Friends. How many people have we welcomed into our community? And who are they?”

At a press conference shortly after Riley’s death, residents attacked Gertz, accusing him of being a “bloodbathed liar.” [his] Gertz denied the accusations, pointing out that Georgia law does not allow for the creation of sanctuary cities and warning residents “not to confuse immigration with crime.”

Tired of the denials and obfuscations from Gertz and others, Waters decided to leave his comfortable semi-retirement and challenge incumbent Carol Myers for the District 8 seat on the Athens-Clarke County Commission. “The way to get them to listen is to become part of them,” Waters argued. “…I would love to be part of a committee so I can at least express my opinion and know that it will be heard.”

The county commission seat is bipartisan, but the two candidates vying for it have distinctly different views on illegal immigration.meanwhile mama sid Myers is concerned about the large number of illegal immigrants in her community. Website For her, that means creating “a community that welcomes everyone, including respecting the rights of Latino immigrants.”

Races for county commission seats and other local races are May 21st.
