Recent research published in Scandinavian Journal of Psychology Last week, researchers found that “awake” people are less satisfied with their lives and more likely to be unhappy, anxious, and depressed. The first study included 851 adult participants, the majority of whom were affiliated with Turkish universities, while the second study included 5,030 Finnish nationals.
As reported by new york postthis study determined a “measure of critical social justice attitudes” through seven progressive truisms.
“If the average income of white people is higher than that of black people, it is because of racism.”
“We should reduce the number of white or European authors on university reading lists.”
“Microaggressions should be challenged frequently and aggressively.”
“Trans* women competing against women in sports is not helping women’s rights.” (reverse scored)
“We don’t need to talk anymore about the color of people’s skin.”
“White people cannot understand how black people feel like other black people.”
“Members of more privileged groups can adopt characteristics and cultural elements of less privileged groups.” (reverse scored)
“Perhaps what surprised me the most was the disparity between men and women. Three out of five women view ‘woke’ ideas positively, compared to only one in seven men. At least That was the case in Finland,” said study author and senior researcher Oskari Lahtinen. He said this at the INVEST Research Flagship Center at the University of Turku. Cypost.
The study also found that female participants were considered more “awake” than male participants.
“Overall, men’s endorsement of scale items was much lower than women’s,” the study notes. According to the survey, women were “more than twice as likely to express support” for social justice ideologies.
“The extent to which the selected subpopulations studied accepted, felt neutral, or rejected the scale items: people of the ‘other’ gender, Left Alliance voters, Green Party voters; Female social science students accepted most scale proposals. Men and male medical students rejected all scale items except one, and male humanities students and Finnish voters rejected all scale items. ”
The study also found that people who subscribed to woke ideology had 67.9% higher levels of anxiety, 32.5% higher levels of depression, and 4.5% higher levels of unhappiness. The Blaze report.
“I was paying attention to trends in American universities in the 2010s, where new social justice discourses were gaining ground,” Lahtinen said.
“While critical social justice (or intersectional or ‘woke’) discourse is primarily based on dynamics within American society, it is now surfacing in other Western countries as well,” he noted. . “The advent of critical social justice (often referred to as ‘wokeness’) discourse has generated much discussion in the Finnish media in recent years.”
“There was very little data on this debate, so the extent to which these attitudes are prevalent seems like a question worth studying,” Lahtinen said. “Prior to this study, no reliable and valid instrument existed to assess the extent and prevalence of these attitudes in different populations, so I set out to develop one.”
“This study was very robust, with a sample size of over 5,000 and good psychometric properties. However, to understand how these attitudes manifest in North America, The scale needs to be validated in a sample.I tell my American colleagues that such attitudes are prevalent in their countries of origin.”
