Jonathan Majors leaves New York courtroom, December 18, 2023, December 18, 2023. Major’s ex-girlfriend is suing him on civil charges including assault, battery, defamation and infliction of emotional distress. Grace Jabari’s lawsuit comes three months after Majors was convicted in a criminal trial of assaulting her in New York City last year. The 31-year-old British dancer filed the lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, alleging escalating physical and verbal abuse from Major between 2021 and 2023.

Majors, 34, has maintained his innocence during the criminal proceedings. A Manhattan jury in December convicted him of one count of misdemeanor assault and one count of harassment stemming from a confrontation with Jabari the previous March. He was also acquitted of separate assault and aggravated harassment charges. Sentencing is scheduled for April 8th.

Ms Jabari said Majors attacked her in her car, putting her in “excruciating” pain. His lawyer claimed Jabari was her assailant.

Priya Chaudhry, Mr. Majors’ attorney in the criminal case, said in an emailed statement that the lawsuit “is not surprising. Mr. Majors is preparing a counterclaim against Mr. Jabari.” She did not elaborate.

Other attorneys and representatives for Major did not immediately return messages Tuesday.

The “Creed III” star had hoped to be found innocent at the criminal trial and to be restored to his status as a budding Hollywood star. But just hours after the verdict, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Co. fired him.

Jabari and Majors first met in August 2021, began dating soon after, and she fell in love with him, according to the new lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges that there were a series of incidents in June 2022 in which Majors displayed controlling and abusive behavior, including a request that he “never again go anywhere where he cannot be reached at any time.”

The following month, Mr. Majors became enraged and threw her into the wall of a shower in Los Angeles, hitting her head against the wall, according to the complaint.

In September 2022, after they moved into a London apartment together while filming the Marvel series “Loki,” Jabari became angry that he had invited a friend to his new home, according to the lawsuit.

“The majors lifted Ms. Grace in the air and threw her onto the hood of a car,” the complaint states. “Grace began screaming for help. The majors then grabbed her by force, placed her in a headlock, and placed a hand over her mouth to prevent anyone from hearing her cries for help.”

The majors then took Jabari into their apartment, put their hands around her neck and told her they wanted to kill her, the complaint alleges. The man then began banging her head against the marble floor and “continued to strangle her until she felt she could no longer breathe,” her complaint states.

Jabari said she did not seek medical attention after the incident at Majors’ urging and because she feared for her career, the complaint said. Major also threatened to commit suicide, according to the complaint.

Despite the abuse allegations, Jabari remained in the majors, according to the complaint. “Like many domestic violence survivors, Grace believed that Majors would change his mind and stop abusing her,” the report states.

In December 2022, the two moved into an apartment in New York. There, the abuse continued, culminating in an assault on Major, the suit says.

Jabari accused Majors of hitting her in the head with his open hand, twisting her arm behind her back and compressing her until her middle finger broke.

Majors’ attorney claimed that she became jealous and furious after reading text messages from another woman on Majors’ cell phone. They claimed that Jabari spread a “fantasy” to take down the actor, who was only trying to get his phone back and escape to safety.

The lawsuit also alleges that Majors lied in media interviews that he had never abused Jabari and filed a criminal complaint alleging that he was the victim in the incident that led to his arrest. He has been charged with indictment.

“Major and others continued to engage in behavior similar to that of many domestic abusers who seek to blame the victim,” the lawsuit says.
