Chrysler recalling nearly 300K cars over defective airbags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Friday that Chrysler will recall about 286,000 vehicles in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could cause side curtain airbag inflators to burst.

U.S. regulators said the inflators in the left and right side curtain airbags could rupture, exposing the occupants to sharp metal fragments that could result in injury or death.

This recall affects select 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 models.

Chrysler, owned by Stellantis, said certain vehicles were equipped with SABIC inflators, which may have been contaminated with moisture during manufacturing by a supplier. This can lead to stress corrosion and potential failure.

These inflators do not use the same propellant or inflator design as previously recalled Takata airbags, the automaker said.

Stellantis will immediately stop 29,000 owners of 2003 Dodge Ram pickup trucks pending repairs after one person was killed last year when a Takata airbag inflator exploded. I was warning you.
