Rand Paul Slams Lawmakers for Putting Spending Ahead of Laken Riley’s Death

On Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) appeared on Fox News Channel and said the Capitol Police are not considering legislation to prevent the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of University of Georgia student Laken Riley. He criticized some of his colleagues.

A partial transcription follows:

McCallum: That’s really tragic. Now, is the Senate going to pass this Laken Riley bill and go back to the fact that if you violate the law, you can be immediately removed from office?

Paul: I think so. I think we’ll get unanimous Republican support. But he’s still one vote short. I think the Democrats will vote unanimously or almost unanimously against this. They have voted in the past not to care.

We talked about deporting people or keeping them in prison. And, you know, the other side has no qualms about trying to deal with people who have criminal records or who were actively involved in crime.

MCCALLUM: That’s difficult, but given the current climate in this country, it’s hard to believe anything the senator says. And if you look at the polls, there aren’t at least a few Democratic senators who look at their own electoral prospects and say, “Yes, I definitely support it.”

Paul: They’re more concerned about spending money that we don’t have. It is very important for them to keep the trains running on time and all their money spent. Even though they would borrow $1.5 trillion in this spending bill. That’s our total spending. They are more concerned with raking in the money and getting it out than with this young woman’s death, and trying to prevent the same thing from happening to anyone else.

McCallum: Okay.

Paul: That’s a shame. It’s an utter disgrace.
