An American woman vacationing on a Caribbean island was assaulted by a man claiming to be a taxi driver, authorities said.

Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force Said Davidson Martin, 29, was charged with causing serious bodily injury.

Suyapa Ramos, a New Jersey native, vacationed in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean this month.

Ramos enjoyed her vacation by visiting pristine beaches and dancing.

On the night of March 10, Ramos tried to take a taxi from the bar back to his hotel.

Ramos said, “I don’t think they run after 10 o’clock. I learned that the hard way. I believed the people who said it was a taxi.”

Apparently, the man who offered to drive Ramos to his hotel was not a legitimate taxi driver.

Ramos said people at the bar appeared to know the suspect taxi driver.

Suddenly, a man, identified as a taxi driver, started attacking her while driving.

“That was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever had to go through to confront evil. Pure evil,” Ramos said. WABC TV.

“While he was punching me, he was growling at me and trying to poke me in the eye,” Ramos said.

Thankfully, Ramos was able to escape the brutal attack.

However, Ramos suffered a serious injury that caused him to lose vision in his left eye.

“Based on information received and interviews conducted, Mr. Martin is suspected of assaulting the female victim,” Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police said in a statement.

Ramos Said“I fought for my life. It was very scary to feel so close to death.”

“It wasn’t just women, it was mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, friends and American tourists,” Ramos added.

The suspect reportedly stole the victim’s cell phone.

Martin’s bail was set at $10,000. He is scheduled to appear in court in May.

The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel order. recommendation About Turks and Caicos Islands in July.

The State Department warned: “Due to the high rate of crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands, we urge you to be on high alert.”

The warning advises Americans not to walk alone at night and “not to physically resist robbery attempts.”

Ramos warned other Americans: “Be careful where you travel, because paradise can turn into a nightmare for anyone, especially women and tourists.”
