A Chicago police officer was injured and a 26-year-old man was killed in a shootout during a traffic stop, police said.
The injured officer was shot in the wrist Thursday night and was hospitalized in good condition, while four other officers who were not shot were hospitalized for observation, police said.
Police said the gunman suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital about 30 minutes after the shooting. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Dexter Reed, 26.

Chicago police said in a statement that the gunfire erupted around 6 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the city’s West Side as officers near a stopped vehicle. Police did not immediately say how many officers fired.

More than 50 shots were picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing records shared with the newspaper. Police said a firearm was recovered from the scene of the shooting.

Chicago Police Lt. Larry Snelling addressed the shooting at a Chicago Police Commission meeting later Thursday, saying he expected the injured officers to make a “quick recovery.”
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. Police said the officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days, which is customary after an officer-involved shooting.
