Ohio Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno told SiriusXM. Breitbart News Saturday He argued that a “frenzied transition to electric vehicles” would “destroy” the U.S. auto industry and greatly benefit China.
Moreno, who founded one of the largest auto dealer groups in the United States, comes just days after President Joe Biden announced new rules Wednesday that would require most cars sold in the U.S. to be EVs or hybrids by 2032. I later joined the program.
“This irrational move towards electric cars, this crazy move towards electric cars, is going to destroy the American auto industry,” he told Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle.
Moreno, who is running against Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) in the Buckeye State race, said the left’s push for electric vehicles is handing over the U.S. auto industry to China.

“If you look at the upcoming Buick electric cars, they’re almost all made in China. All the Lincoln electric cars are going to be made primarily in China. The batteries are made primarily in China. ” Moreno said. “So we’re handing over our auto industry, which at one time accounted for almost 7 percent of our gross domestic product (GDP), to our enemy, China. That’s insane.”

“There’s a company in China called BYD that people are going to hear a lot about,” the Trump-supporting candidate added. “They’re building these huge factories in Mexico, and they want to ship these cars ($15,000 to $20,000 electric cars) to the United States that will decimate the U.S. auto industry.” Sherrod Brown is fully committed to this.”

This is the “bloodshed” that former President Donald Trump was talking about at the Bucky Values PAC rally for Moreno on March 16 in Dayton, Ohio. Trump’s full quote was not taken completely out of context by traditional media. He said “we will impose 100% tariffs on all vehicles” that China manufactures in Mexico and attempts to sell to the U.S. market. But if he is not elected president, he predicts he will flood the U.S. market with cheaply manufactured cars from China, causing a “disaster” in the U.S. auto industry.

“If you’re an auto worker and a union member in Ohio, Sherrod Brown doesn’t care about you,” Moreno said Saturday. “He’s going to destroy your career, he’s going to destroy your life. He’s going to change it. Vote for me, vote for Bernie Moreno against Sherrod Brown, and then… We’ll make sure your job is protected.”
The Republican candidate also stressed that the federal government “should not encourage or penalize” consumers to buy certain types of vehicles.
“I started with a tiny little dealership. I built a group of 15 dealers representing 30 brands and was responsible for a company that sold probably over a million cars in its lifetime. “I’ve never had anyone come into my showroom and say, ‘What kind of car does Sherrod Brown or Joe Biden want me to buy?'” Moreno told Boyle. “That’s not how our market works.”
“People should be allowed to make their own choices. People should not be encouraged or penalized to buy one type of car or the other,” he added. “People know what’s best for themselves and their families. It’s a basic American tenet, but Sherrod Brown thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. I believe I should be the one to tell them how to drive.”
