NBC’s hiring of Ronna McDaniel makes media go ballistic

NBC’s hiring of former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel as a contributor intensified the dissonance between journalists and Democrats.

McDaniel appeared on NBC News shortly after leaving the RNC. Her position was announced last Friday, but an interview she gave on “Meet the Press” on Sunday made a big difference in her backlash.

“A free and independent press is a cornerstone of our democracy, and the precedent set by Donald Trump and his cronies, including Ronna McDaniel, is set to chip away at its credibility and make room for MAGA lies and deceit.” “We have faced and continue to face unethical attacks,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said in a statement.

“Truth should not be debated in our political discussions. Ronna McDaniel has been proven to be a liar and has no place in honest, objective conversations about the future of this country.” .”

Hiring major politicians as analysts is nothing new. His MSNBC, NBC’s sister network, gave former White House press secretary Jen Psaki her own Sunday show.

MSNBC also has Michael Steele, a former RNC chairman and ardent Trump opponent, as an analyst. Hired by CBS Reince Priebus, McDaniel’s predecessor at the RNC, served as an analyst and former White House chief of staff after leaving the Trump administration.

NBC’s entertainment division aired former President Donald Trump’s signature show “The Celebrity Apprentice” for just under a decade before canceling it during the 2016 campaign.

News networks appear to be trying to make inroads into Republican voters. Last year, NBC hosted the third Republican presidential debate, which infuriated many conservatives.

Still, the animosity appears to run both ways. Even some NBC employees openly revolted.

NBC’s chief political analyst Chuck Todd told “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker on Sunday’s show, “Our bosses put you in this situation. I think I have an obligation to apologize.”

“There’s a reason a lot of journalists at NBC News are uncomfortable with this.”

Much of the enthusiasm was fueled by complaints about McDaniel’s involvement in President Trump’s efforts to block the 2020 election and her past admonitions to the network.

In a controversial interview with Welker on Sunday, McDaniel reiterated, “I keep saying there were problems in 2020,” but added, “The reality is Joe Biden won and he It’s the president,” he declared.

This seemed to signal a change in tone from last year, when she spoke to CNN’s Chris Wallace. [Biden] Fairly won. ”

McDaniel also defended audio that surfaced that appeared to encourage Wayne County, Michigan, officials not to certify the 2020 election results.

Prior to the interview, Welker noted that NBC had been planning to hire the former RNC representative for some time before the announcement was made.

Some prominent staffers at NBC and MSNBC did not silence their concerns about McDaniel.

“Ronna McDaniel is a ‘necessary and material witness’ who has ‘unique knowledge’ regarding the ‘conspiracy’ of fake voters to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election,” said MSNBC host of the same title. says Katie Pang, a barrister and lawyer. The author posted this on her X.

Other prominent media figures were similarly adamant about the development.

“Today, I boycotted NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ and I will do so until insurrectionist lowly Ronna McDaniel is no longer a so-called ‘analyst’ on NBC,” said Harvard Law School professor emeritus. Lawrence Tribe said.

“I would like to interrupt our commentary (including my own) on James Carville, Ronna McDaniel, and others to point out that the House has been in recess for two weeks without taking action to help Ukraine. “It’s really a shame,” former Republican commentator Bill Kristol lamented.

Meanwhile, prominent conservatives expressed amusement at the uproar.

“NBC: Our viewers should be warned that there will be a *real Republican* in the next corner,” said Ben Domenech, editor in chief of The Spectator.

“Chuck Todd is intolerable. NBC News now employs two former spokespeople for the Biden administration: Jen Psaki and Simone Sanders. Did he oppose it? But Republican @RonnaMcDaniel Does God forbid we hire people?” conservative influencer CJ Pearson wrote.

“Heaven forbid NBC should co-opt the voice of the Republican Party,” RNC spokesman Keith Schipper scolded.

MSNBC President Rashida Jones privately informed employees that the left-leaning cable network had no plans to air McDaniel. The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing people involved..
