Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott (D) is demanding that the media stop showing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
In a telephone interview with CNN on Tuesday morning, Scott sensationalized the horrifying footage of the bridge collapse, calling it “something out of an action movie.”
“It’s something I never thought I’d get to see. And to be here now and see it is even more surreal,” he said.
Then he made a strange request to the media.
“I will be the first to ask CNN and everyone else to stop airing the video,” Scott said. “No one should have to see their own family member seriously injured or anything else over and over again, because that only traumatizes our community.”
CNN anchor Sarah Sidner responded, “That’s right, Mayor.”
That request is really strange.
The media’s job is to report on news such as when a huge cargo ship collides with key infrastructure and suddenly collapses. The video is key to the story because it shows what happened.
Without the video, Americans would miss important context of the shocking incident, including the fact that the ship appeared to lose power twice before hitting the bridge.
We do not ask the media to stop showing photos and videos of tragic events because such multimedia exists to record history. Every year, videos of the 9/11 terrorist attacks are played on social media and television. It was one of the most shocking days in American life, but no one is calling for the video to stop airing because Americans universally understand its importance. .
Meanwhile, authorities said Tuesday afternoon that efforts to rescue at least six people continued.
Governor Wes Moore (Democratic Party) I said that at the beginning of the day. Bridge personnel are “heroes” because they acted quickly to stop traffic on the bridge when they heard the cargo ship’s “mayday” call and realized the ship was about to hit the bridge.
