Steve Huntley, 70, was asleep early Thursday morning when the noise started.
Huntley — who lives in the Nutbush neighborhood of Memphis — told WREG-TV The sound was “bang, bang, bang.”
“That’s what got my dog excited,” he added to the radio station.

Sure enough, Huntley said the intruder was trying to break into the home through the back door, and the elderly homeowner told WREG that he came face-to-face with the intruder.
“I pushed him,” Huntley told police. “He hit the ground there. I slammed the door and went inside to get my pistol.”

Huntley told WREG that when he returned to the confrontation point, he fired one shot and the intruder ran away.
“That’s why a lot of people are moving out of this area because of what’s going on,” Huntley told the station, adding.

According to WREG, a review of Memphis data revealed that police received 170 calls for trespassing, property crimes and theft over the past year, all within a radius of Huntley’s home. It was said to be within 800 meters.
The department said Huntley had personal reasons for being cautious after his son was shot and killed in 2016.
Therefore, Huntley told WREG that when others threaten the safety of his loved ones, he is prepared to throw himself down and die if necessary.
“He tried to break in in the wrong place,” he said of the hapless intruder. “Because my motto is, ‘When you come here, you’ll meet your maker.'”
Police found the suspected intruder several blocks from Huntley’s residence, and charges against him are still pending, WREG added.
