A transgender weightlifter won the Masters U.S. Weightlifting Championships on March 24 in Reno, Nevada. He took first place in the women’s 76 kg weight class.
Vicki Piper, 57, defeated the second-place finisher at 127, finishing 17 behind Krista Dornbusch.

Vicki Piper, a man, competed as a woman at the Masters National Weightlifting Championships this weekend in Reno, Nevada.

During the event, Piper lifted 56 kg (123 lb) in the snatch and 71 kg (156 lb) in the clean and jerk. Meanwhile, Dornbusch lifted 46 kg (101 lb) in the snatch and 64 kg (141 lb) in the clean and jerk.
Piper celebrated the big win, saying this was his first ever championship contest.
“Thank you USA Weightlifting for hosting such a thoughtful and supportive event here in Reno, NV,” Piper wrote on Instagram.
USA Weightlifting was recently enacted rule Transgender athletes will be allowed to compete if they can show evidence of at least two years of hormone therapy “to minimize any gender-related competitive advantage.”

Piper, who won the 55 and older division, towered over her opponents on the winner’s podium.
