A stabbing in Illinois left four people dead and five others injured, one in critical condition, authorities said Wednesday.

The attacks occurred at multiple locations in Rockford, Illinois, west of Chicago.

A suspect was taken into custody after police say he “attacked and stabbed” the victim.

Police say the man is an adult but has not been identified.

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamera said he was “completely shaken” by the “senseless” violence of the attack.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and one victim later died at a hospital.

Police said they did not yet know the motive for the attack, adding that not all the victims were stabbed, but did not provide further details.
