California bars will offer drug testing devices to stop drink spiking

Starting July 1 of this year, a new law will require many establishments that serve alcohol in California to provide drug testing tools and post signs warning about spiking drinks.

The new law affects about 2,400 facilities in the Golden State, the state said.

Facilities must provide test strips free of charge or for a nominal fee to customers who request them.

Test strips have been on the market for several years and are often distributed within colleges, universities, and the US military community.

According to local FOX 2 KTVU, state Rep. Josh Lowenthal of Long Beach, who owns three restaurants, has introduced a bill to prevent sexual assault.

“We have a crisis of sexual assault that primarily targets women and members of the LGBTQ community,” Lowenthal said in a video presentation to Congress.
