Pete Alonso ‘happy to enjoy’ Mets’ opener as free agency looms

The Mets last opened the season at home in 2020.

2018 was the last time the Mets opened the season at home with fans in the stands.

Friday was a strange history for Pete Alonso, who had never enjoyed an opening game in front of a packed Citi Field.

Alonso first said he liked the vibe of his bizarre career, but he wasn’t thinking about whether it would be his last Opening Day with the Mets.

“I was really happy to be able to enjoy this day,” Alonso said after the 3-1 loss to the Brewers. “An opening date here is not necessarily guaranteed. This is the first time in my six years, starting with the tour and COVID-19, that I will be playing my first game of the season at Citi Field. I’m really glad I got to experience it.”

Alonso will likely face questions about his future all year, as the Mets have not extended the star first baseman’s contract, who could become a free agent after the season.

There is no known talk of a long-term contract, but new Mets president David Stearns said Alonso can handle the pressure to perform during his contract year.

Alonso has always said he loves New York and playing for the Mets.

Alonso heard a loud ‘Pete’ cheer as he was introduced, but only the returning Edwin Diaz received a louder applause, before he and his team-mates gave the home crowd a shout-out. Couldn’t give a reason.

Starling Marte was the only player with a hit, and Alonso went 0-for-3 with a ground out, a fly to the left field warning line, and a foul out.

Since his debut in 2019, Alonso has emerged as one of the best sluggers in baseball, hitting the most home runs in baseball (192) and making three All-Star teams.

He showed he can handle the big moments.

If it felt like something bigger because Friday could be the final, Alonso didn’t say it publicly.

“It’s an exciting time this year,” Alonso said. “I was really excited today.”
