Americans increasingly concerned about illegal immigration, terrorism: poll

Concerns about illegal immigration and terrorism have gained attention among American adults since last year.

A Gallup poll released Friday shows Americans’ priorities are shifting starting in March 2023, with immigration and national security concerns weighing heavily on many people’s minds. .

Inflation remains the country’s top concern, with 55% of respondents saying they are “very” worried about the impact of inflation, down 8% from a year ago.

Illegal immigration has increased by 7 percentage points since last year, increasing from 41% to 48% since March 2023. This was largely due to increased concern among Democrats, whose support rose from 14% to 27%.

Concern about the possibility of a terrorist attack also increased by 7 points, from 36% to 43%.

Following the Oct. 7 Hamast terrorist attack in Israel, U.S. intelligence leaders warned the public of the increased risk of attacks worldwide.

Officials say national security concerns are compounded by the unprecedented number of illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. southern border.

Gallup also conducts monthly “unannounced” polls on national concerns, asking respondents to name the country’s most pressing issues.

In this poll, Gallup reported that illegal immigration was the most common answer at 28% of respondents. This is in line with last month’s poll results.

Concerns about illegal immigration are at their highest since 1981, according to a Gallup poll.

The second spot in the unannounced poll was poor leadership and government, at about 19%. This was followed by concerns about the economy at 14% and concerns about inflation at 11%.

The poll was conducted between March 1 and March 20 among 1,016 people via mobile and landline telephones. ±5% error is reported.
