Kate Winslet has shared her thoughts on filming the “absurd” sex scenes for her new political satire miniseries, The Regime.
In the HBO show, the 48-year-old actress played Prime Minister Elena Burnham, the authoritarian leader of a fictional European country. As the oppressive regime begins to crumble, paranoid Elena takes on disgraced soldier Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts) as her new confidant, and the two embark on a twisted romance.
In a recent interview with the Times, the “Titanic” star said that the obscene sex scene with Schoenaerts was “so fun to shoot” that at one point the cinematographer and makeup artist had to leave the set. He recalled that it didn’t happen. Laughing too much.
“This is satire,” Wislett said. “It makes no sense and is so absurd that all you can do is laugh it off.”

She told the Times that there was an intimacy coordinator on set, but that their guidance was rarely needed. “To be honest, Matthias and I know each other, so we’ve built up shorthand and trust for over 10 years,” she said.
But Schoenaerts told the Times that he did not hold back during the filming of the violent scenes between Herbert and Elena, as well as the confrontation with his character’s nemesis, imprisoned former Prime Minister Edward Keplinger (Hugh Grant).

“Being ridiculous was such a breath of fresh air,” she said. “I’ve dabbled in comedy in the past, thinking, ‘I’ll be lucky if I do something funny someday, but if it doesn’t happen, it’s not going to happen.'”
Winslet continued, “But this show was hysterical. There was a lot of ad-libbing and having fun. We couldn’t get through a scene without laughing.”
Additionally, the British native said she was “over the moon” to learn that The Regime’s story centers around a complex female protagonist.
“Times have changed. The last 10 years have been even bigger than the previous 10. This time around, there are so many female-led works, and women using their voices creatively and differently. “I think it’s a movement, learning how to do it,” she said.

“You don’t have to be strong and loud all the time,” she added. “It can’t do anything if it can’t get into the weaker side as well. We see where Elena’s devilish strength comes from and what’s at the root of it.”
