Yankees’ comedy of throwing errors leads to unlikely Astros run

HOUSTON — The Yankees won’t be using Saturday’s bottom of the fifth inning as a fielder’s textbook, to say the least.

The Astros’ one-run lead turned into a two-run lead with one play by the Yankees, including two errors.

The Astros had one out against Marcus Stroman, with runners on first and second base, and Yordan Alvarez hit a ground ball that missed wide at first base.

Anthony Rizzo threw it cleanly, throwing what could have been an inning-ending double play to second baseman Anthony Volpe, who had a difficult game.

Stroman was trying to cover first base, but Volpe’s throw there was rough, allowing Alvarez to reach safely.

Anthony Volpe’s throw to first went wide of Marcus Stroman.

At that point, Victor Caratini had rounded third and was heading home.

Stroman received the ricochet of Volpe’s throw and attempted to send a quick throw home, but it went over the head of catcher Austin Wells.

The errant ball hit the camera and Alvarez advanced to third base.

But Stroman was able to stop him there and end the inning.

Ironically, Volpe and Stroman, both of whom received errors on plays, won Gold Gloves for their respective positions.

The match itself was not a defensive gem as each team made mistakes early in the match which led to each other conceding goals.

He scored four runs through the fifth inning, but none of them were earned.
