A Florida official is in trouble after being accused of stealing a 96-year-old woman’s life savings and depleting her funds for renovations and a new home. Independent.
regina hill An Orlando city commissioner is accused by investigators of securing a power of attorney regarding an anonymous elderly woman. With the money, she said, in addition to getting cosmetic surgery and buying a home, she also bought clothing, car insurance, dental surgery and a New Year’s Eve stay at a hotel in Miami.
The report said Hill is also suspected of collecting more than $10,000 in debt in the elderly woman’s name. However, Hill has not yet been arrested or charged in the case, although she is the subject of a state investigation that began in February 2023.
According to authorities, I received the tip from one of Hill’s staff members who was fired. Hill first met the elderly woman in 2021 after learning about her poor living conditions, according to her affidavit.
Within just a month, Hill became the woman’s power of attorney, guardian and health care representative, according to the affidavit. At the time, the woman had $164,000 in her savings account. And while the woman told authorities she remembered signing “some kind of document,” she said she didn’t fully understand the details of the legal document. She admitted that she hadn’t.
The Independent reported that the elderly woman did not agree with Ms Hill to use her savings to get a mortgage.
But Hill insists he did nothing wrong. She released the following statement:
It is unfortunate that such suspicions have forced me into this situation. It’s a shame not only for me but also for (a 96 year old woman) who I loved and cared for like family. I trust God above all else and I trust the process. After her 10 years of service to the City of Orlando, I have demonstrated love and compassion for my constituents, the City, and my family. I know the truth. I know and believe that I am entitled to due process, and I intend to wait for my day in court to prove my innocence.
The City of Orlando issued its own statement saying, “The City is aware of the investigation by FDLE and related civil litigation involving Chief Hill. We have no knowledge of the details of that investigation and are not involved in the lawsuit. We will not be involved or involved in any litigation.”
