Three police and security officials said the detainees were not directly involved in the attack but were helping those who orchestrated Tuesday’s bombings targeting Chinese nationals. They said some of the detainees had links to Pakistani militants, adding that the suspects were still being interrogated and other raids were ongoing.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media about the records. Officials said some of the detained suspects took a car loaded with explosives to Shangla district in Khyber Pakhtankhwa province, where a suicide bomber rammed the car into another vehicle and killed Chinese workers. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong was also at Noor Khan Air Base when the body was taken to the base on Sunday night. In his remarks, Mr. Zaidon expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the attack.

The slain Chinese nationals were on their way to work at Das Dam, Pakistan’s largest hydroelectric project, when their car was attacked.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also visited Dasdam on Monday and met with Chinese engineers and workers. Pakistani officials will also brief Sharif on the progress of the project.

Chinese and Pakistani law enforcement authorities are conducting separate investigations into the attack, which has drawn nationwide condemnation. China also called on Pakistan to ensure the protection of its nationals working on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects across Pakistan.

Authorities said the Chinese bombing victims were heading to the project site under tight security.

Other Chinese people working on CPEC-related projects have faced similar attacks in recent years.

In July 2021, a suicide bomber detonated explosives inside a bus carrying Chinese and Pakistani engineers and workers, killing at least 13 people, including nine Chinese, and killing a Chinese company. has temporarily ceased operations.
