Senior Iranian commander killed after alleged Israeli strike on embassy in Syria

A senior commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed on Monday in an alleged Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in Syria and Lebanon’s Revolutionary Guards Quds Force, was among those killed in the airstrike. According to Reuters and Iranian media.

Iranian media reported on Monday that an Israeli missile attack destroyed the Iranian consulate in Damascus and killed several people.

According to Iranian media channels, the Iranian government has announced a tough military response to the attack.

Iranian Ambassador to Syria Hussein Akbar announced in a statement that the embassy was attacked by an F-35 fighter jet and six missiles.

Akbar accused Israel of violating international law and said it was doing “everything that is against humanity,” according to a statement shared by the pro-Iranian Telegram channel.

The Hill has contacted the Israeli military for comment. Israel rarely acknowledges attacks inside Syria, but it has carried out frequent attacks over the years amid a shadowy war with Iran.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense also announced that there was an attack in Damascus around 5pm local time, and the embassy was completely destroyed, Iranian Channel reported.

Since the war broke out in Gaza, Israel has repeatedly attacked Iranian officials in Syria, where Israeli forces are battling the Iranian-backed Palestinian militant group Hamas.

An airstrike in late December killed a senior Iranian official in Syria, and an airstrike in January killed five Iranians in the country.
