Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele predicted Monday that former President Trump will soon violate an extended gag order in a hush money criminal case.
Judge Juan Machan, who is overseeing hush money trials in New York, said: handed down the verdict On Monday night, he expanded the former president’s gag order to include comments about Marchand’s family and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D).
“So Donald Trump is going to violate this order three times, two times, once…” said Steele, a political analyst for MSNBC, on “Inside with Jen Psaki.” ” he quipped while guest hosting the show.
“How do you think this will play out when it happens? Because we know it will,” Steele asked former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirshner.
Kirshner predicted that fines would be imposed if the former president violates the gag order, but argued that would not be an effective way to prevent Trump from attacking.
“And of course, who cares? The civil case where Judge Engoron violated the gag order resulted in a minor fine,” Kirshner said in connection with Trump’s civil fraud.
Mary McCord, a former deputy assistant attorney general, added that it was “unusual” that the latest expansion of the gag order did not mention pretrial detention for violating the gag order.
“In two criminal cases, they didn’t actually do it.” [gag orders] “We’re looking for Mr. Trump’s signature to understand that these are part of the conditions of his release, and that they are expanded and that if he violates them, his release could be revoked,” McCord said in an interview.
“The fact that neither judges nor prosecutors have stepped up to actually stop President Trump from speaking is a real problem,” Kirshner added.
The original gag order in the case limited President Trump’s public comments about jurors, witnesses and “families of his attorneys and staff,” but included comments to the families of Marchand and Bragg. It wasn’t.
The order, at Mr. Bragg’s request, came after the former president launched a series of attacks against Mr. Marchand’s daughter, Lauren, a Democratic political consultant. She previously worked as an executive at the progressive political consulting firm Authentic Campaigns, where she managed the campaigns of several prominent Democrats, including President Trump’s primary opponent in 2024, President Biden. was supporting.
Last week, President Trump reacted to an X (formerly Twitter) account believed to belong to a judge’s daughter that used an illustrated photo of the imprisoned Trump as its profile picture. However, the New York State Administrative Office of Courts (OCA) later confirmed that the account was no longer associated with Lauren, who deleted it about a year ago.
The former president revoked the expanded gag order on Tuesday and reiterated calls for Marchand to resign. Marchand previously rejected a formal request to withdraw from Trump’s lawyers, but his lawyers indicated Monday they would file a new motion seeking his retraction.
Less than a day after the gag order was expanded, President Trump Posted Video from Tuesday morning’s “Fox & Friends” segment with host Brian Kilmeade. criticized Prosecutors Matthew Colangelo and Lauren Marchan.
Last fall, Trump also received a gag order in the federal election interference case in Washington, D.C., barring him from making any public statements targeting prosecutors, potential witnesses or court officials involved in the case.
Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
