UConn women has another shot to replicate past March Madness glory

For now, UConn’s 2016 title marked the end of an era, but it has since served as a peak that the Huskies are still trying to recapture.

Brianna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson (a class that finished with a 151-5 record) left for the WNBA after the NCAA Tournament.

They laid the foundation for the University of Connecticut’s 111-game winning streak. They won four titles, making the program 11.

But the Huskies have not won a national title in the past six seasons heading into Friday’s Final Four game against Iowa.

This is the longest drought since winning the championship for the first time in 1995.

They have advanced to five national semifinals and one championship, filling out the roster with star players including Paige Backers, who helped build this year’s battle of the underdogs. There is.

But until the next championship, 2016 will be the last link to a historic era that UConn has yet to recreate.

“There was a trust and a bond that was built, and from there came a certain relentlessness towards them, an understanding that even if we won, we would.” [in 2015]There were some hiccups along the way,” Marisa Moseley, who was an assistant at UW in 2015-16 and is now the head coach at Wisconsin, told the Post.

Moseley said the coaches never mentioned the possibility of going undefeated as the game unfolded.

That wasn’t the goal. It wasn’t the focus.

Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier said head coach Geno Auriemma’s “emphasis” was that the Huskies lost to Stanford in November 2014 and ultimately went 38-1 in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. It goes back to the previous season when they won.

At the time, the Cardinal derailed the Huskies’ goal of an undefeated streak. The Huskies were undefeated in 2013-14.

“We’re not untouchables. People can come up and hit you if you’re not careful,” Collier, a freshman in 2015-16, recalled Auriemma’s words.

Los Angeles Sparks star Keir Nurse told the Post that while the expectation is always to advance to the postseason by winning high-pressure postseason games, he wasn’t afraid one loss could ruin everything. Ta.

In fact, Nurse added, as his winning streak neared 111, he felt even more pressure to maintain the winning streak next season.

UW continued to recruit top players in subsequent seasons, including Buccaneer, Aaliyah Edwards, and KK Arnold, all of whom are on the current roster.

However, the Huskies dealt with injuries and tournament losses, never being able to accomplish something that seemed elusive and always seemed inevitable.

This year, the Huskies made it to their most recent Final Four after a 4-3 start.

They needed a different route from the 2015-16 season to get a chance.

“If you had asked me a month ago, two months ago, if we would be here, I would have said it would take a miracle,” Auriemma told reporters on Tuesday.
