Google Considers Introducing Paid AI Features in Search Results

Google is reportedly exploring the possibility of charging users for AI-powered search features, in a major shift from its long-standing ad funding model, according to recent reports. financial times report.

According to three people familiar with the company’s plans, financial times Google has reported that it may introduce paid tiers for search results powered by generative artificial intelligence tools, a new approach to monetizing new AI-powered search capabilities.

Google’s Black George Washington (Gemini AI)

The potential move would be a first for Google, which has relied solely on advertising to fund its search products since 2000. But the company is used to charging for AI enhancements for other services. For example, the “AI Premium” tier of a Google One subscription adds $10 per month compared to the standard “Premium” plan, while “Gemini Business” adds $20 per month to a standard Google Workspace subscription. .

Under the proposed plan, Google’s standard search (without AI) would continue to be free, and subscribers to the paid AI search tier would continue to see ads next to their Gemini-powered search results. However, the increased costs associated with AI-powered search may necessitate this new revenue stream. Last year, Reuters reported that running a search query through an advanced neural network like Gemini costs 10 times more than a standard keyword search, adding billions of dollars in additional costs across Google’s network. It has been suggested that this may be the case.

Demand for AI-enhanced search remains uncertain, as evidenced by the limited impact of Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which has invested heavily in generative AI capabilities over the past year. Additionally, adoption of Google’s experimental opt-in Search Generative Experience (SGE) is reportedly limited.

Despite these challenges, the current tech industry’s enthusiasm for generative AI is likely to push Google to integrate this technology into its “premium” search products sooner rather than later. The company’s engineers are currently working on the backend technology needed to launch such a service, but no final decisions have been made. The hyper-awake Gemini AI has already made its mark by trying to erase white people from history.
