Most Americans say democracy important for US, but not functioning well: Survey

Most Americans say democracy is important to America’s identity, but the country’s democratic institutions are not working well, according to a new poll.

Associated Press-NORC Public Affairs Research Center Votes Found Seventy-six percent of Americans said a “democratically elected government” is very or very important to the country’s identity. Only 13% of Americans say a “democratically elected government” is somewhat important. 9% said it was not very or not at all important to the country’s identity.

However, survey respondents expressed little confidence in the country’s ability to function as a democracy. More than half (53%) of Americans surveyed said they believe the United States is a “well-functioning democracy,” while 31% believe the country is a “well-functioning democracy.” He answered that he believed it to be a “nationalist country.”

Democracy in the United States is a focus of his re-election campaign, and in his January speech near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the first major general election speech of the 2024 cycle, he said, “Your freedom is on the ballot.” Stated.

Biden also said during his speech that former President Trump was “willing to sacrifice democracy to get to power.”

The latest AP-NORC poll also found that 91% of American adults say the right to vote is very or very important to the country’s identity. Also, 84% of Americans said religious freedom is very or extremely important to the country’s identity.

The AP-NORC poll was conducted March 21-25 among a sample of 1,282 people and had a margin of sampling error of 3.8 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
