Comedian Charlamagne the God guest-hosted “The Daily Show” on Wednesday, slamming DEI as “almost trash” and claiming it’s “just corporate PR.”
The TV personality slammed diversity, equity and inclusion programs as ineffective in a monologue mocking the efforts adopted by many companies and organizations in 2020 following the killing of George Floyd.
“The truth about DEI is that while it’s well-intentioned, it’s mostly garbage. Get it? It’s like The Little Black Mermaid.” He said. “Just because racists hate it doesn’t mean it’s good.
“And you know I’m right, because you’ve all been in a diversity training session and thought, this is terrible.”
The “Breakfast Club” co-hosts then also pointed out that the number of Black people in power at large companies is the same as it was five years ago, and more than 900 studies have found that DEI programs improve minority work environments. He said this shows that there is no improvement.
“I’m not surprised these programs didn’t work, but here’s why: It’s just corporate PR,” he said. “They want a good atmosphere.”
“True DEI will only come through Black leadership,” he continued.
The monologue was praised by some, including billionaire Elon Musk, who shared footage of “The Daily Show” with a raised hand emoji.
Charlamagne has not been shy about sharing his thoughts on a variety of issues and has criticized both President Biden and former President Donald Trump.
Last month, he called President Trump a threat to democracy in a speech that read: ABC News interview Describing Biden as an “unattractive candidate”
Charlamagne also said in December that Biden should withdraw so another Democrat could run for president.
