Sports movies have a way of impressing audiences. Many of them tell the story of the underdog, but each film tells its own unique story, even if they share similar themes of overcoming obstacles and overcoming odds.

There are many sports movies that are completely fictional, many of which are based on real events, with some Hollywood-style fictional elements thrown in, of course.

In this roundup, you’ll find some classic titles, as well as some less mainstream titles that tell powerful sports stories based on real people. All of these movies are based on real people and events, but these true stories are mixed with elements of fiction. Some movies follow real events more closely than others.

1. “Don’t forget the Titans”

No sports movie compilation would be complete without “Remember the Titans.”

The film is set in the ’70s, when an African-American coach named Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to coach the TC Williams High School football team in Alexandria, Virginia. His assistant coach, Bill Yost (Will Patton), has been a favorite of the program for years, even before Boone joined the team.

Two men from different races must work together to lead their team to victory. The film features real people, such as coaches and a few players like Jerry Berthier, as well as fictional characters and events.

2. “Rudy”

“Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!”

The film is based on the life of Daniel Eugene Ruttiger, played by Sean Astin, who dreamed of playing football at the University of Notre Dame.

Rudy certainly had excellent athletic ability, but academic barriers and small size made it difficult for him to get into a reputable university.

This is a story of hard work, perseverance, determination, and a great underdog who never gives up on himself and his dreams.

This movie was released in 1993. Rutiger has also written two of his books: “Rudy’s Insights for Winning in Life” in 1999 and “Rudy: My Story” in 2012.

A documentary was also made about his life in 2018.

3. “Radio”

The 2003 film “Radio” was inspired by James Robert “Radio” Kennedy. This is based on Gary Smith’s 1996 Sports Illustrated article “Someone to Lean On.”

The film tells the story of Kennedy, an intellectually disabled man who frequently visits the practices of the local football team, TL Hanna.

The film depicts Kennedy’s friendship with Harold Jones, the football team’s coach, and Kennedy’s importance to the team and community.

4. “My All American”

“My All American” tells the heartbreaking true story of Freddie Steinmark. The film is based on Jim Dent’s book Courage Beyond the Game: The Story of Freddie Steinmark.

In the film, Steinmark dreams of playing college football and refuses to let his small stature get in the way.

Steinmark will embark on a journey to play football at the University of Texas at Austin.

The film tells the story of Steinmark’s time with the team and the devastating diagnosis that changes everything.

5. “Raging Bull”

“Raging Bull” is a widely popular sports movie based on the life of boxer Jake LaMotta.

The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Robert De Niro as LaMotta.

De Niro won an Oscar for playing LaMotta in the film. The film is based on the 1970 memoir Raging Bull: My Story.

The 2005 film “Cinderella Man” is also a popular boxing movie based on a true story. The film, set during the Great Depression, is based on the life of James J. Braddock, played by Russell Crowe.

6. “Miracle”

The film is based on the real-life Herb Brooks, who was portrayed in the film by Kurt Russell.

“Miracle” is based on true events surrounding the U.S. hockey team’s remarkable victory over the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics.

This Disney movie was released in 2004 and is a fan favorite.

Another popular sports movie from Disney is “The Rookie,” a movie based on the life of Jim Morris, who joined MLB at the age of 35.

7. “We Are Marshall”

We Are Marshall is a 2006 film that tells the tragic true story of a 1970 plane crash. The accident killed 75 people, including 37 players from the Marshall University football team, 8 coaches, 25 boosters, and 5 flight crew members.

A new coach, Jack Lengyel, played by Matthew McConaughey, is hired to rebuild a program filled with tragedy and despair from all that has been lost.

8. “Invincible”

“Invincible” is a 2006 movie starring Mark Wahlberg as Vince Papal.

The film follows Papale, a Philadelphia bartender who faces a series of bad luck and attends a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles to earn his chance.

9. “Moneyball”

Moneyball is a 2011 film based on the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis.

The story follows Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, general manager of the Oakland Athletics.

“Greater” is often compared to “Rudy”. The 2016 film is based on Brandon Burlsworth.
