Greatest Underachievers in North American Sports
When thinking about the top sports franchises in North America, a few teams likely pop into your head. The New York Yankees and their impressive 27 World Series titles probably set the standard for MLB teams. In football, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots are often seen as benchmarks for success in the NFL.
But today, I’m not here to focus on those well-known teams.
If your team loses 3-1 in the playoffs, what should you do?
Today, we’re diving into some of the biggest underperformers in North American sports, and it’s not just about calling them boring or saying they’re done. I want to highlight franchises from each of the four major sports leagues—NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA—that have underachieved despite plenty of talent.
NBA: Phoenix Suns
When it comes to underachievers, the Phoenix Suns stand out. Over the years, they’ve had incredible talent, featuring future Hall of Famers like Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, and Devin Booker, alongside All-Stars such as Bradley Beal. Yet, they haven’t found lasting success.
You might think that with players like Steve Nash and Charles Barkley having played for them, they would have snagged at least one championship. But, sadly, they came close, notably in 1993 and 2021, only to fall short against the Bulls and the Bucks.
It’s hard to explain their lack of success. Maybe their stadium is on a strange spot, or perhaps luck just hasn’t been on their side.
NHL: Buffalo Sabers
The Buffalo Sabers are another franchise that has struggled despite having a wealth of talent over the years. While they could have also shared this spotlight with the Bills, I think the Sabers take the cake. It’s quite unbelievable that a team with such a strong roster hasn’t won the Stanley Cup.
Recently, they traded star players like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhardt, becoming a sort of feeder team for championship contenders. This past season, Eichel’s new team won the Cup, and Reinhardt played a key role in helping his new franchise, the Panthers, secure their first championship.
Simply put, the Sabers have had an impressive mix of talent—including legends like Pat LaFontaine and Dominik Hasek—but the fact they’ve been unable to win a Cup while contributing to other teams’ successes adds to their legacy of misfortune.
NFL: Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings, ah, where do I even start? It might be fair to say the entire state of Minnesota has had its share of sports heartache, but the Vikings lead the pack when it comes to underachievement. They’ve had Hall of Fame greats, and yet, success in the playoffs has eluded them.
Consider the 1998 Vikings team, which included not just one but two Hall of Fame wide receivers—Randy Moss and Cris Carter—but they still didn’t win a Super Bowl. With a talented roster, including players like Fran Tarkenton and Adrian Peterson, it’s baffling that they haven’t captured that elusive title.
MLB: Seattle Mariners
And then, there are the Seattle Mariners. Honestly, I had them in mind for this list from the start. It’s almost criminal that a franchise with players like Ken Griffey Jr., Ichiro, and Randy Johnson never managed to secure a World Series title, especially considering they were all on the same team for a stretch.
Even in the 2000s and 2010s, when the Mariners featured Hall of Fame-caliber talent, they never even made it to an American League Championship. Meanwhile, teams far less skilled than they were found a way to win titles. It almost feels like the baseball gods are having a laugh at Mariners fans’ expense.
In short, the Seattle Mariners certainly deserve their spot on this list as standout underachievers. It’s a tough pill to swallow for fans who’ve seen so much talent go to waste.
