Magnitude 4.7 earthquake rocks NYC, tri-state area

A rare earthquake shook the New York area Friday morning, rattling parts of the Big Apple, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The preliminary magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck around 10:23 a.m. near Lebanon, New Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremors may have been felt as far north as New Paltz, New York, and as far west as Delaware.

Kelly Schoen, a mother of two who works the night shift in Newark, Del., said she was in bed Friday morning when she heard a “light rumbling.”

“At first I thought it was my husband trudging downstairs,” Sean told the Post.

The extent of damage caused by the earthquake was not immediately clear.

New York Governor Cathy Hochul said: “My team is assessing the impact and any damage that may have occurred and will keep the public updated throughout the day.”

Mayor Eric Adams also said he was briefed after the earthquake and that no major impacts were reported in the city.

The official Empire State Building X account jumped into the online fray, joking, “I’m fine.”
