Senator Tim Scott (RS.C.) We have started a new video series A spotlight on five Black Republican members of Congress.
The series, which aired its first video on Friday, delves into what it means to be a Black Republican in the context of the 2024 presidential election and political landscape.
The series is called “America’s Starting Five,” and roundtable discussions include Scott and Reps. Burgess Owens (Utah), John James (Michigan), and Wesley Hunt (Texas). has appeared.
Rep. Byron Donald of Florida is credited as part of the series, but was not part of the roundtable that aired on Friday.
The group focused on past statements by President Biden, including his controversial comment that if black voters don’t vote for him, they’re “not black.”
“It’s fun, but it can also be frustrating,” Scott told others in the video. “It’s frustrating that the Democrats and Joe Biden get away with saying the most despicable things and not being held accountable by anyone for saying the most despicable things. It’s funny because it’s funny. I mean, seriously. So you can’t be black? Some old white man told you you can’t be black unless you vote for him?”
Scott also revealed that his grandmother was a conservative.
“She may never have said the word ‘conservative’ or voted conservative, but everything she taught me was conservative.” said Scott.
Participants then listened to Biden comment that “poor children are just as smart and talented as white children.”
James said the comment, which received backlash at the time, was not a gaffe.
“I think Joe Biden is as serious as a heart attack,” James said, with Hunt emphatically agreeing next to him.
“The arrogance of white liberals looks down on not just African Americans, but poor children in general,” James continued. “He’s talking about socio-economic disparities. He’s talking about elites versus the working class and the poor. And this is why a lot of their policies are starting to move things away from where they’re most needed. can be explained.”
Scott put his own bid for the White House on hold earlier this year and is a leading candidate to be former President Trump’s running mate.
Mr. Trump, who has sought to expand support among black Americans, suggested in February that he was considering both Mr. Scott and Mr. Donald for vice president. Many conservatives hope such a move could draw support from Biden among black voters in November.
The second episode of “America’s Starting Five” will air on April 12th.
