Delaware man leads police on multistate chase after being shot

A man shot and killed by police in Delaware allegedly stole a police officer’s cruiser and led authorities on a pursuit, but crashed his car in neighboring Pennsylvania and was captured after a foot pursuit.

New Castle County Police responded to a call of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex in Wilmington around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, when Tyrese Knuckles, 25, fled the apartment complex. County Police Chief Joseph Bullock said there was a “physical confrontation” with police.

Officers attempted to use a Taser to subdue Knuckles, but he was ultimately shot in the torso by an officer, Bullock said. Knuckles then jumped into a nearby police cruiser and fled, sparking a chase across Wilmington that ended with “multiple accidents,” mostly involving police vehicles, before he ended up on the interstate. It continued north on Highway 95, eventually colliding with a cruiser in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Block said the pursuit involved police officers from New Castle County and Wilmington, as well as state police from Delaware and Pennsylvania. Interstate 95 near the scene of the final crash was closed for several hours, causing major traffic disruptions in the area.

Knuckles was injured in the incident and was being treated at a Pennsylvania hospital for his injuries and gunshot wounds, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening. He was listed in stable condition Friday.

Block said one of the crashes in Delaware injured a New Castle County employee and another injured a state trooper. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The New Castle County police officer who shot and killed Knuckles was identified only as an eight-year veteran. The officer is on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is standard procedure in police-involved shootings.

Charges stemming from the chase are pending, authorities said. It was later discovered that Knuckles was wanted on several unrelated warrants issued by the Philadelphia Police Department, including one for stalking. It was unclear Friday whether he had hired a lawyer.
