A group of House Democrats unveiled a bill Friday that would rename a federal prison in Florida after former President Donald Trump.
of Bill seeking redesignation The Miami Federal Correctional Facility, the Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Facility, was introduced in response to Republican-backed legislation to rename Virginia’s Dulles International Airport after the 45th president.
“When my Republican colleagues introduced a bill to rename Dulles after Donald Trump, I said renaming a federal prison was a better option.” said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), one of the three Democrats who voted. said in a statement.
“There’s no reason to wait,” added the congressman, whose district includes part of Dulles Airport.
“It makes sense that the federal prison closest to Mar-a-Lago should be named after him,” Connolly continued. “We hope our Republican friends will join us in giving Donald J. Trump the only honor he truly deserves.”
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) and Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) joined Connolly in helping introduce the bill.
“Everyone knows President Trump loves writing his name in gold letters on every building,” Moskowitz said in a statement. “But as a public servant, I just want to help the former president because his name has never been on a federal building before.”
“Donald J. Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to be criminally indicted on 88 charges in four separate criminal cases,” Garamendi said. “MAGA Republicans have proven they have no desire to solve the real problems facing our country. I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to our former president.”
The effort to rename Dulles Airport, about 40 miles from the nation’s capital, Donald J. Trump International Airport is supported by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) and a six-member Republican caucus.
“With millions of domestic and international travelers using our airports, there is no greater symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing the words ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as you land on American soil.” Reschenthaler said in a statement Tuesday. President Trump’s record on the economy, energy policy, and border security; His historic number of judicial appointmentsand his “peace through strength” diplomacy was the reason the former president was honored.
