Two dead, 7 injured including police officer after Miami-Dade County shooting

Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a shooting in Miami-Dade County, Florida, early Saturday morning.

A police officer was among those injured in a deadly altercation in which someone pulled a gun at a Doral City business. Police said a security guard who tried to intervene was shot dead.

Police Chief Edwin Lopez said at a news conference that the quick response and “heroic actions” of Doral police officers on the scene “prevented the incident from escalating.”

Police say there was an altercation between customers at the martini bar at CityPlace Doral around 3:30 a.m. When the security guard tried to intervene, police said one of the customers pulled out a gun and shot the security guard.

Two Doral police officers were on duty at the facility at the time and responded immediately. The officers drew their weapons and fired back at the gunman.

One Doral police officer was injured in the lower leg during the shootout. He shot and killed the gunman, according to Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

The injured officer was able to apply a tourniquet on himself and is currently in stable condition, Lopez said.

According to police, six bystanders, one woman and five men, were shot. Two of the people present were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting. Lopez said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, Miami-Dade police are investigating the homicide, and Doral City police are assisting with both investigations.

The Chief noted that from a year ago to the present, the Doral Police Department has been conducting an active shooter training exercise involving multiple agencies that resulted in multiple casualties at CityPlace Doral. It is believed that further loss of life was prevented.

“While we can never guarantee 100% that incidents like this will not occur, we have no doubt that if an incident like this were to occur in South Florida, we would have the capacity, training, and necessary skills to respond immediately. . Diffuse the incident and eliminate the threat,” Lopez said.

He praised the courage and quick and decisive action of the police officers who responded.

“Today is a very sad day for our community in South Florida. Every time a police officer is shot, it tears at the core of our community. But we know he is alive and stable. We are grateful for the status quo and look forward to completing this investigation.” ”
