Jordan Spieth tends to have roller coaster rounds, often featuring spectacular shots, for better or worse.
But nothing compares to the challenge he endured Saturday on the 618-yard par-5 18th hole at TPC San Antonio.
The three-time major champion drove the ball to the left of the fairway, placing it under a tree branch. Then, things started to get interesting for Valero at his Texas Open.
Instead of taking medicine, Spieth decided to try Hero Ball. At this point, he was 5 under for the championship, 8 under with Akshay Bhatia, and 2 under for the round. He felt that his aggressive play would serve his purpose, but instead it backfired.
His second shot bounced off a limb and swerved to the left, coming to rest next to a tree. Drainage channel within the penalty area. But then Spieth decided to do something crazy.
Instead of relieving himself, Spieth intentionally drove his third shot into the roof of TPC San Antonio’s clubhouse. His ball merrily traveled down the roof and into the gutter.
NBC Sports’ Dan Hicks said: “We’ve seen everything from Jordan Spieth. Now he’s in the gutter!”
There was no white stake marking the clubhouse as out of bounds, so Spieth could be Use the clubhouse to your advantage. Spieth knew that too. As a result, PGA Tour rules officials gave Spieth a free drop in the field of play.
Spieth then relieved 124 yards short of the pin and hit his fourth shot into the front of the green. Unfortunately for Spieth, he three-putted and finished the day with a double-bogey 7 and an even-par 72.
He started the day with back-to-back bogeys, but he worked hard to get rid of that by getting birdies on the 6th, 7th, 12th, and 17th holes.
Upon arriving at the 18th tee, some might have expected Spieth to finish with a pedestrian par or birdie, given that the final hole at TPC San Antonio is one of the easiest. not.
Still, in typical Spieth fashion, his final hole was a roller coaster.
