Former Capitol Police officer warns that ‘nothing is preventing’ another Jan. 6

Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn warned that “nothing can prevent” the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol because of a lack of accountability “at the highest level.”

“Accountability has two purposes,” Dunn, who testified before the House Select Committee investigating the Capitol attack, said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” on Saturday.

“It provides some kind of recovery and healing for those affected, and it also acts as a deterrent to prevent things from happening again,” he said. “There is no accountability at the highest level on January 6th. Therefore, there is nothing to prevent a repeat of January 6th.”

Dunn said that “democracy” is the “bigger” issue at hand compared to other key issues in the 2024 election, adding that if former President Trump were to potentially return to the Oval Office, the Democratic Party argued that it would invalidate any policy goals it hoped to achieve.

“Democracy is the bigger issue here,” said Dunn, a candidate for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District. “So many things are at stake right now. As we’ve been talking about, women’s reproductive rights, gun safety, affordability, health, we have a dictator who can do whatever he wants. When you’re in the White House, none of that matters.”

“So all the issues that we talked about and that Democrats are fighting so hard for don’t even matter when you have a dictator in the White House.”

During his testimony, Dunn said he witnessed police officers being attacked during the Jan. 6 riot.

He is running in the Democratic primary to replace retiring Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.). In February, he joined Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mich.), Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Calif.) and others. It won high-profile support from House Democrats in February, with the backing of -Texas).
