Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, incorrectly told a group of high school students in Houston that the moon was a “planet” that was “consisted mostly of gas.”
Jackson Lee, who once headed the Space Subcommittee of the House Science Committee, made several false statements that shocked the crowd at Houston’s Booker T. Washington High School during Monday’s solar eclipse.
“You’ve probably heard the term ‘full moon,'” Jackson Lee told the students who were with him on the playground before the eclipse. “Sometimes you just need a chance to go outside and see a full moon. A full moon is made up mostly of gas. That’s why the question is, why and how can we humans live on the moon?” “Is this a gas that can do that?”
“The sun is a very powerful source of heat, but it’s almost impossible to get close to it. The moon is easier to handle,” he added.

Jackson Lee continued to make some questionable statements. In one statement, she told her students that the moon not only reflects the sun’s light, but also emits “unique light and energy.”

In another statement, she incorrectly stated how solar eclipses occur.

This is not the first time Jackson Lee has made questionable statements about science, much less the first time he has translated his lapses into political issues.
