In an interview with Univision’s Enrique AcevedoBiden said he is unsure whether he will be able to stop the surge of migrants entering the United States through the border.

Biden blamed Republicans for not supporting a bill he said would give him authority to curb the immigration crisis. The president acknowledged that Customs and Border Protection does not have enough officers to properly screen immigrants entering the country.

“We are in a situation where, for example, we don’t have enough police officers to even interview people to determine whether they have legitimate fears or concerns in order to qualify for entry. “We don’t have the resources. Border Patrol, we don’t have enough equipment to detect fentanyl and illegal drugs coming in,” Biden said.

“We worked on this with a very conservative Republican senator from Oklahoma, and he ran on one side, the Democrats ran on the other side, and they ran for four months. I worked and came up with a proposal. It has everything I wanted,” he continued, $118 billion, 370 page bill It was announced by the Senate in February. A reporter asked Biden: “Has he made a final decision on any executive orders in terms of what he wants to do at the border, including the authority to close the border?”

The president claimed he had “indicated that.”

“I’m considering whether I have that authority. Under the law, I have that authority. We have five people a day at the border, more than 5,000 people trying to cross the border. But just because you can’t control it, you should slow down.” No, there is no guarantee that I would have that authority on my own without a law. And some say you should take the plunge and give it a try. And if I’m shut down by the court, I’m shut down by the court. But we’re going to fix it, we’re going to fix it now,” Biden said.

During the first five months of fiscal year 2024, the Border Patrol reported: 1,151,000 encounters. CBP data does not include known and unknown fugitives who are not being pursued by law enforcement.
