ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, the wildly popular psy-op aimed at Western teenagers, achieved a massive 60% profit increase in 2023, outpacing Chinese competitors such as gaming giant Tencent.
bloomberg report ByteDance’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) soared to more than $40 billion in 2023, an impressive 60 percent increase from $25 billion a year earlier. The company’s revenue also increased significantly, reaching nearly $120 billion from $80 billion in 2022.

ByteDance’s success can be attributed to its ability to leverage its popular short video platform to expand into international e-commerce and maintain its global popularity. The company’s domestic app Douyin has evolved into an all-in-one platform, encroaching on rivals such as Tencent’s WeChat, Alibaba’s e-commerce and Meituan’s food delivery service.
Overseas, the successful rollout of TikTok Shops in markets such as the US and Southeast Asia has provided new revenue streams beyond digital marketing. TikTok aims to grow its U.S. e-commerce business tenfold this year, leveraging its 170 million users.
But ByteDance faces challenges in the U.S., its most profitable market. In March, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban TikTok unless ByteDance sells the app. The outcome of the bill in the Senate remains uncertain, and the upcoming presidential rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump and Beijing’s response could further complicate matters.
Despite these hurdles, ByteDance has begun streamlining its operations by cutting jobs in its game development and enterprise software divisions, which have not met expectations. The company is currently focused on keeping up with the latest trends in generative AI by building its own chatbot and large-scale language models.
