Rowdy migrants scuffle with police at New York hotel shelter after employee calls 911 on ‘very violent’ asylum-seeker

On Tuesday, a group of unruly migrants got into an altercation with law enforcement officers at a New York hotel being used as a shelter for an influx of asylum seekers. new york post report.

Around 1 p.m. Tuesday, a Ramada Inn employee called 911 after one of the immigrants residing at the hotel became “extremely violent.”

“The man is out of control here,” the employee told the dispatcher. “He’s very violent towards everyone. He throws things at everyone. We need someone here right now.”

Police say the hotel received more than 130 calls last year. Noisy report.

Video of the altercation showed Yonkers police detaining two immigrants at the Ramada Inn, which is housing 250 asylum seekers. Video shows other residents at the shelter surrounding the officers and blocking the door in an apparent attempt to prevent the arrest.

When police arrived at the scene, they handcuffed Arnall Kent, 35. Body camera footage showed several officers struggling to remove Kent from the premises. A woman, identified as Yainilet Hernandez, 24, was seen on video trying to stop the officer from putting Kent into the back seat of his squad car.

While being arrested, Kent yelled in Spanish, “Why does he have to hit me? I’m not being taken away. I’m not being taken away. I didn’t do anything.”

Law enforcement officials said Hernandez attempted to hit several officers during the scuffle. One officer reportedly suffered a knee injury and had to take time off duty, according to WNYW.

Kent was charged with menacing, disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration, the Post reported. He was released without bail.

Hernandez was charged with second-degree assault, obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest. She was held on $500 bail.

Yonkers Police Department spokesman Detective Sgt. Frank DiDomizio said Thursday that officers “responded to the call and responded appropriately.”

Immigrants living in hotels claim they are mistreated by staff.

“They abuse us. They invade our privacy and take our money and belongings without our permission,” Kent told WNYW.

He claimed that the employees were violating not only his rights but also the rights of other immigrants living at the hotel.

One Venezuelan migrant at the shelter said: WABC TV“We fled the country because we weren’t safe, and now we’re not safe here.”

The migrants said they were told by hotel staff that they were entering their rooms without permission to remove dangerous equipment, including pots.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano (D) said, “While I am angry at the people who bring immigrants into our community, we certainly intend to treat them with less dignity than they deserve.” No,” he said.

Ramada Inn’s shelter program is operated by the New York City Department of Homeless Services and Westhub.
