On Saturday, police shot and killed a man after a stabbing rampage that left six people dead and others injured, including a 9-month-old infant.
NSW Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke said the gunman entered the Westfield Bondi Junction mall at around 3.20pm local time and stabbed about nine people with “probably a knife” before “putting them in harm’s way.” “Added.”
A nine-month-old infant was “transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital with pediatric stab wounds,” the report said.
Mr Cook said inspectors stationed nearby were directed to the suspect’s location.
The suspect went on to say that the gunman turned around and the police chased him from behind and shot him dead.
“She took action and saved the lives of many different people,” he added.
Cook said the suspect’s motive was not clear, but that he acted alone and there was no ongoing threat.
NSW Ambulance Deputy Commissioner Brent Armitage said two other people were taken to hospitals across Sydney and their conditions were currently unknown.
Surveillance camera footage showed a man holding a long knife running through the mall. Local media reported chaos, with some customers fleeing and others trying to stop the man. Hundreds of people were evacuated.
There were also reports that a man outside the mall rescued the baby after the mother was stabbed.
“The mother came with the baby and threw it at me. There was a hole in the baby and it looked pretty bad,” he said.
Nine-month-old Harriet was taken to hospital and underwent emergency surgery to repair her injuries.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the attack “a horrific act of violence that indiscriminately targeted innocent people.”
“The country expresses its deep condolences and sympathies to all those who are grieving for those who lost their lives. And we send strength to those who were injured,” he said.
The incident was the deadliest mass killing in Australia’s largest city since 2011, when 11 people were killed in an arson attack at Quakers Hill Nursing Home.
