Scottie Scheffler wins Masters for 2nd time in career

Scottie Scheffler won his second career Masters victory Sunday at Augusta National, holding off Ludwig Oberg, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa.

Scheffler entered the fourth round with a one-stroke lead over Morikawa. However, Scheffler’s determination to participate on the final day was not firm.

Scheffler had planned to withdraw from the tournament completely if his wife, Meredith, gave birth to their first child. However, that didn’t seem to happen, and Scheffler remained at Augusta and was able to win the second green jacket of his career.

He started the day with two consecutive pars and began building an advantage with a birdie on the third hole. He had bogeys on the fourth and seventh holes, but finished well on the front nine and advanced to the back nine.

Scheffler birdied the 8th, 9th and 10th and bogeyed again on the 11th. He returned with birdies on the 13th and 14th to maintain a three-shot lead over Oberg and a five-shot lead over Homa.

Even Patrick Mahomes had to step in because he had such a role.

“Scottie is a very good player,” the Kansas City Chiefs star wrote in X.

He also birdied the 16th hole, giving him a four-stroke lead over Oberg. On the 18th, he almost holed out a few yards from the cup. He hit the final putt to complete a spectacular performance.

Scheffler opened the tournament with a 66, which was bettered by Bryson DeChambeau’s 65. He finished with 72 and 73 in the second and third rounds, respectively.

He arrived in Augusta, Georgia, No. 1 in the World Golf Rankings, joining Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the Masters multiple times. Schaeffler did the same in 2022.
